I had set off for Scotland on a last minute forecast for snow in the Highlands. At this time drone photography was still in its infancy and I had seen very few image of snow by drone.I had set off for Scotland on a last minute forecast for snow in the Highlands. At this time drone photography was still in its infancy and I had seen very few images of snow by drone.
On arrival at Glasgow airport I then drove 4 hours up the west coast as the blizzard set in. The snow becoming so thick it became difficult to actually fly the drone. I checked the location of Glenfinnan on my maps which told me I could get there just 10 minutes before sunset. As I approached Fort William the blizzard turned to torrential rain. Severely disappointed I decided to at least drive out to Glenfinnan to check it out for morning. Suddenly the precipitation turned to snow again. The viaduct greeting me like a scene from Narnia.
The storm miraculously eased for long enough to fly the drone, I sent it off knowing the image could be something special. I managed just one frame before hail started to visibly batter the camera dotting the lens with moisture meaning I could take no more pictures. The resulting image appeared across the UK media including the Guardian Eyewitness and The Daily Telegraph. It was also exhibited in Landscape Photographer Of The Year. Shot on the DJI Mavic 2 Pro
Harry Potters Glenfinnan Viaduct Autumn

Having photographed the viaduct in Winter (when the train doesn’t run) I now had an itch to scratch….I wanted an image of the famous Jacobite Steam train on the Viaduct. I set out on the exact same journey once again (if less cold).
I wanted to capture the stunning autumn colours around the viaduct. A close eye on forecasts told me that the area would get one day of beautiful sunshine with no winds. (Rare for this area).
I arrived at the viaduct for the timed crossing of the viaduct by the Jacobite Steam Train. I knew I had just one go at capturing the train so I was determined not to mess it up, so much so that I had 2 drones powered up and ready to fly (The DJI Mavic 3 and The Mavic 2 Pro). As the time approached I could hear the train chugging through the mountains but I couldn’t yet see it.
I raised the DJI Mavic 3 into position and suddenly there it was in all its glory on the viaduct. The most striking part of the scene being the steam on the train perfectly back lit by the low sun trailing off across the entire image. The perfectly calm weather making for a perfect image.
The image appeared in The Guardian Eyewitness, The Daily Telegraph and The Times.

An impromptu image shot while on commission for the Royal Mail. I had been after what we call a ‘hero shot’ to illustrate the first ever delivery by drone for the UK postal corporation.
An early breakfast and production team meeting overlooking the beautiful harbour of Tobermory turned into a complete scramble to launch the drone as the sky turned a deep orange as the sun rose. Having photographed many sunsets and sunrises I was aware the colour would last just a few minutes if that. I ran to the quayside and waited the longest 90 seconds of my life as the drone powered up. The resulting image appeared in both the Daily Telegraph and The Daily Mail.

As a new owner of a DJI Mavic 2 Pro I was extremely excited to try out the brand new 20mp Hasselblad Camera.
I again set off for the Scottish Highlands with a brief of capturing Scottish Castles. Number one on my list was Dunnottar Castle in Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire once featured in Mel Gibsons Hamlet.
I set out for a dawn image on a bitterly cold morning. The sun perfectly rising over the North Sea almost putting a spotlight on the historical landmark. The image appeared in The Times Newspaper.
